I Don’t Know Why

Published by Bit under Quirks and Smirks

I’ve been reading Order of the Stick for a while now. It’s a gaming-themed online comic. Very enjoyable, and I highly recommend it if you’ve ever done any kind of D&D based gaming (or really, even if you haven’t).

Here’s a link to today’s OOTS comic

And why did I write about this now as opposed to earlier? The thing that amuses me the most about today’s comic is that the turtle running away in the last panel appears to be carrying a handbag.

I find that incredibly funny. I don’t know why.

Friday or Fried Egg?

Published by Bit under Quirks and Smirks

“You will need to know the difference between Friday and a fried egg. It’s quite a simple difference, but an important one. Friday comes at the end of the week, whereas a fried egg comes out of a chicken. Like most things, of course, it isn’t quite that simple. The fried egg isn’t properly a fried egg until it’s been put in a frying pan and fried. This is something you wouldn’t do to a Friday, of course, though you might do it on a Friday. You can also fry eggs on a Thursday, if you like, or on a cooker. It’s all rather complicated, but it makes a kind of sense if you think about it for a while.”

The above quotation is from one of the random little essays that is included in ‘Salmon of Doubt’, the last book from Douglas Adams, which was published posthumously. A friend and his editor scrounged through his computer and random writings from his life, and compiled those, plus a few chapters of the book he was working on when he died, into ‘Salmon of Doubt’. (Someone feel free to correct me if I’m not quite getting that right).

I adore Douglas Adams. His books and writings display a bizarre flow of thought that I really appreciate coming from someone other than my own mind. The last sentence of the above quote sort of sums up Douglas Adams’s writing style fairly well; it’s all rather complicated, but it makes a kind of sense if you think about it for a while.

If I haven’t mentioned it, Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy is possibly my favorite book. Really, the whole series.

I think one of the things I like about it is that it carries through this idea that everything in the universe is connected, across time, across space. Everything is important. The tiniest change can have a big impact. Happiness can be found in the simplest of things. And the universe is a bizarre place, so you may as well embrace that and work with it.

It’s important to appreciate the things in life that leave you with a smile on your face and with a sense of contentment in life. So today, I appreciate Douglas Adams. For no particular reason except that it’s Friday. Or is that Fried Egg?

Because ‘Pollenator’ Just Sounds Naughty

Published by Pollen Girl under Quirks and Smirks

I am… Pollen Girl!

I don my bright yellow (with just a hint of neon green) Spandex outfit and cape, and protect the world with my Pollen of Power! (You haven’t seen the outfit? It must have been at the cleaners.)

Each morning I hop in the Pollenmobile, and travel through town on my way to work, seeing the lovely layer of pretty pollen powder. The world glows and the pollen blows in the breeze.

My secret superpower, you ask? The Sneeze of Fury! Just wave a tiny bit of Power Pollen under my nose, and my lungs unleash a barrage of sneezes that would knock your socks off!

No no, don’t thank me. Some people dream of a White Christmas, but I know you were secretly dreaming of a Yellow Spring. You can tell me all you want that your eyes are just watering from allergies; I know they are really tears of joy.

I must be off to check the pollen counts, and make sure the Pollen Producers (you call them trees and flowers) are happy in their work. Pollen Girl away! Achoo!

Volunteer Licking

Published by Bit under Quirks and Smirks

According to this historical page about Tootsie Pops

“A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks.”

The conclusion we can draw from the above paragraph? It takes an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop… but only an average of 252 licks to get to the center of a volunteer.
